Steven Johnson

Steve trains and coaches the elite squad at BTS and is responsible for the sports development programme within BTS including feeding talented players into the GB development programme based in Manchester.  He runs 3 squad training sessions per week and coaches his team at top class tournaments around the world including in Serbia, Croatia, United States, Spain, Germany, Turkey, Austria, Netherlands and many more.

Steve joined BTS at the age of 5 and has trained and competed for the club ever since under the guidance of Joe Brown and Gareth Brown.  A truly loyal member of the team, he has won numerous national and international medals and titles along the way.  As a coach, Steve will now share his passion for the club and the sport with his students.

Steve is available for private tuition sessions in sport taekwondo, traditional taekwondo, self defence and strength and conditioning.

Master Joe Brown

6th Dan Master Joe Brown is an ex-British serviceman for HM forces. He began training in Taekwondo in 1973 whilst serving with British Land Forces in Gun Club Barracks, Kowloon, Hong Kong where he earned his Black Belt and has kept up his training ever since. Upon returning to the UK in 1975 Joe began training with 6th Dan Master Vincent Chung and Chung Do Kwan in London. He found a club in Southampton where he worked (Southern Martial Art Centre, Chung Do Kwan under Instructor To Men Ken) Joe lived in New Milton and so opened his first club in his hometown under Chung Do Kwan.  Joe has an extensive career as a professional bodyguard for VIP's such as Cynthia Rothrock (Hollywood Martial Arts Superstar), World Champion Kickboxer Bill "Superfoot" Wallace and Andra Franett (World Karate Champion). Joe was the Founder and Chief Instructor of British Taekwondo South (laterly British Taekwondo schools) which he established in 1981, the club is still going strong to this day. He has trained and coached many athletes to medal positions, that include National, International, European, World and Olympic medallists.  Amongst them are juniors/seniors Jemma Johnson (Bronze medal at junior world championships), Aaron Cook, Gareth Gurd (Bronze medal European Championships 2001), Louise Gill (European Champion 1997) and his son Gareth Brown to name but a few.
Master Joe is one of the most experienced coaches in Great Britain having coached at World Olympic selection/qualifying for the 2000 Olympic Games in Croatia, Women's Europa Cup team which won bronze in the team event (for example, Joe Brown has coached  World Champion and Olympic medallist Sarah Stevenson in both finals of the Woman's Europa Cup in Finland and Izmir Turkish International 2001 as a prelude to the Olympic Games and coached Paul Green (Silver Medallist World Championships, Germany 2003). Joe coached Paul to a Gold Medal in the Sardinian Open International in 1998. He also coached all Junior / Senior European and World Championships since 1995 for BTCB and UK Sport Taekwondo. Joe was the BTF National Team Coach 1985-1994, BTCB Principal National Team Coach from 1994-2002, Regional Centre of Excellence National Team Coach 2002-2006 and the BTCB Combined Services Military Team Coach Great Britain 2005-2008

Between 1985 and 1994 Joe Brown was selected by the then British Taekwondo Federation to train in Korea at two specific venues (Kukkiwon and Korean National University for Sport).  The aim was to learn training and coaching methodology for sport taekwondo.  He spent 3 months there.

Craig Roppolo

BTS Head Coach

Craig joined BTS in 2003 and worked his way to his black belt in 2005.  He took part in his first ever tournament in 2006 as a veteran and has since won a number of veteran medals and titles including a silver medal at the National Championships in 2011.
Craig started covering classes for BTS as an assistant instructor in 2008 and in 2010 became involved with training the elite squad as well as coaching at competitions.  In 2013 Craig was in charge of the team at the British National Championships and managed to clinch the 2nd place team trophy.

Dave Maddock

BTS Maddogs Instructor

Dave Maddock

Dave Maddock joined BTS in 2016.  Dave originates from a kickboxing background and formed Maddogs Martial Arts in 1999.  Dave is three times world kickboxing champion and was head junior coach for the World Association of Kickboxing Organisations (WAKO) for 11 years, the pinnicle of his career being the WAKO Junior World Championship finals where he led the Great Britain team to the final.  Dave manages our BTS Stoke on Trent venue.  Dave coached his daughter Charlie Maddock (7 world kickboxing titles) before she made the transition to Taekwondo where she won the Commonwealth Championships and European Games during her first year.
