25.07.2016 Note to all BTS members:

For all training sessions and tournaments athletes must wear WTF approved protective equipment purchased from BTS coaches.  This ensures effective insurance cover and removes any risk of an athlete wearing non-WTF approved kit.

Clothing:  For training BTS t-shirts or hoodies must be worn with either white TKD trousers or tracksuit trousers below the knee.  No shorts allowed.

At all tournaments athletes must compete in a BTS printed dobok.

Uniform rules apply from September to give everyone a chance to purchase the correct kit.

Many thanks, Joe Brown (Principal team coach)

December 9th: BTS Team Fund to benefit from DVD sales

BTS has received the first batch of DVDs after John Street agrees to supply the club at no cost.  The sets of 5 DVDs cover the taekwondo teaching syllabus including patterns, kicking technique and self defense.  They will be sold with all proceeds going directly into the Team Fund for the benefit of our aspiring young athletes.

December 7th: Great results at the Park Cup in Germany

BTS had 7 players in Germany this weekend for the 30th edition of the Park Cup.  The team had a fresh look to it with 3 members travelling with the squad for the first time.  Tegan Paynter, Zoe Ratcliffe and Jaden Cullen made the most of this opportunity and respectively claimed gold, silver and bronze.  Tegan dominated her weight group winning her 3 fights by points gap while Zoe showed her more experienced team mates how to do a reverse turning kick taking the gumshield out of her opponent's mouth and sending it flying across the ring!

The more experienced players were not to be outdone though with Kara and Jeamy winning gold while Owen claimed silver.

November 30th: GB Taekwondo confirm BTS's talent club status

Thank you to Alex and Joe for their hard work on that one!

November 22nd: Test match day with Black Widow Tkd

BTS travelled to Wakefield today to get some match practice with Black Widow Taekwondo club.  Test match days are an opportunity for coaches to share their knowledge and learn from each other while also providing players with different sparring partners to the ones they train with every week.  Richard Fairhurst (Black Widow Tkd) and Steve liaised to arrange this day and we look forward to welcoming Black Widow for another training day in Southampton in the new year.

If any other clubs would like to work with BTS please contact Yan (Team Manager) on 07977 468717 or Steve (Team coach) on 07772 476329.

September 13th, 2015: Amazing National Championships for BTS

8 National Champions, 2nd place team for the advanced category and 3rd place overall team trophy.  Well done BTS, this has been an amazing performance.

Our 6 advanced 2015 national champions are: Leona Cullen, Tegan Paynter, Jeamy Navarro-Schrank, Georgia Appleby, Ben Haines and Darin Waldock.

Our 2 novice 2015 national champions are: Phoenix Goodman and Sharissa Gannaway.

BTS is now the team with the highest number of advanced national champions of any team in the country.

Advanced team (minus Ben, Fran, Daniel and Josh):

Novice medalists:

3 happy coaches with the 2nd place advanced team trophy:

The weekend was really positive for the team both on and off the mats but a couple of special mentions are in order:

- Zoe Ratcliffe: very unlucky for having to retire through injury while 4-0 up in the final.

- Owen Pepper: for his fantastic performance in his final and his lovely black eye.

- Phoenix Goodman: 53-2 is more often seen on a rugby pitch than on a taekwondo ring, but there it was!

- Ben Haines:  thank you for being loyal to BTS despite having the choice of competing under UK Sport this weekend.

- Archie Waldock: for not recording Darin's brilliant knock out chop kick!

- Dona Paynter: for not putting our midwifery skills to the test!

September 1st, 2015: Darin Waldock is presented with his kukkiwon certificate

June 26th, 2015: Australia Open medals for Ben and Max

Former BTS players Ben Haines and Max Cater came up with the goods for GB at the Australia Open both bagging a bronze medal, some valuable ranking points... and a cuddly toy!

March 28th, 2015: BTS Technical Championship

This year's technical championship was by far the best to date.  Strong competition didn't stop Fran Watson retaining the overall title in the pattern competition while Jeamy Navarro-Schrank took the inaugural technical kicking title.  A big thank you to all the parents who helped with catering and cakes on the day to make this day extra special and raise over £400 for the Team Fund.  A special mention and thank you has to go to Phoenix Goodman and Holly Pepper for their fund raising initiative.  Make sure to check the pictures in the "photo gallery" section of the website.

March 13th, 2015: Dutch Open medals

Georgia Appleby and Jeamy Navarro-Schrank both fought their way to a bronze medal at the very well attended Dutch Open this year.  The weekend was also very important for the less experienced members of the squad: Kara Jonsson, Jasmine Cooke and Ryan Simpson put in good performances in what was their first ever G-class Open event.

February 1st, 2015: Huge weekend for BTS in Belgium

BTS took 21 players to Belgium for the Keumgang Open on Saturday and the Hanguk Cup on Sunday.  Two tournaments in one weekend was a first for the club and the objective was to give our young ones as much competition time as possible.  The team, which was for the biggest part very inexperienced, came back with a huge haul of medals and the 2nd place girls team trophy (Sunday)!  Well done to everybody.

February 1st, 2015: Former BTS players lead the way for GB

Not one, not two but three former BTS players medalled for GB this weekend in Bosnia.  Read GB Taekwondo's report by clicking here.

December 8th, 2014: Park Cup, Germany

2 gold medals at the Park Cup in Germany for the final tournament of 2014 and a first international tournament for Jasmine.  Bring on 2015!

July 27, 2014: Taekwondo Friendship Championship

BTS took a very young team to the Friendship Championship in Reading this weekend.  Our players may have lacked some experience (this was the first ever tournament for a number of them) but they certainly didn't lack the talent and enthusiasm coming back with 2 gold and 4 silver medals.

Lilly put in a good performance and won 2 fights to win her gold medal.

Daisy Mae showed showed she isn't scared of anything fighting 2 weight groups above her own and bringing back silver.

Holly had a brilliant first tournament winning her first fight before missing out in the final to take home silver.

Owen also won his 1st fight and got silver.

Leona put in a good effort in her first ever tournament to take home a silver medal.

Jayden is clearly a girl on the move up as she knocked out her 1st  opponent in the first round before winning her final and taking gold.

Daisy Mae was the performance of the day but well done to the whole team.  The future of BTS is secure!

June 21, 2014: BTS technical championship

Fran Watson takes the overall title at the 2014 BTS technical championship in a very close affair.  She beat 2013 champion Natasha Earwood by just 0.5 points.  Well done to all who took part.

June 18, 2014: BTS player will represent GB at the cadet world championships in Baku, Azerbaijan

Jeamy Navarro-Schrank has been selected as part of a 12 strong team to represent GB at the upcoming inaugural cadet world championships which will be held in Baku (Azerbaijan) from July 24th-27th.

Congratulations to Keisha Fletcher who passed her 1st Dan this Saturday.

On Sunday BTS showed it has strength in depth as Sean Wilson (3rd from left) passed his second Dan, Hubert Dutkiewicz (4th from left)  passed his third Dan and Rowan Snell (1st from left) passed his fourth Dan.

May 19th, 2014: Spanish Open success

BTS once again placed a player on the top step of the podium at the Spanish Open.  Jeamy took gold this year after 4 fights against Germany, Spain and 2 french players including the recent Dutch Open winner.

December 18th, 2013: Archie Waldock selected

GB Taekwondo have today announced that Archie Waldock has been selected for the Junior World Championships and the selection tournament for the Junior Olympic Games.  Both events will be held in Chinese Taipei in March.  Congratulations Archie!

This selection comes on the back of very impressive performances and results at the recent selection events including Gold in Serbia and Gold in Croatia.  Archie is one of only 2 club players who will represent GB at the qualification tournament for the Youth Games.

September 27th, 2013: Junior European Championships

Georgia Barnes has today become the first British fighter in 14 years to claim the title of Junior European Champion!  Georgia joined BTS when she was 7 years old and has trained with the club ever since (last 10 years).  This was Georgia's last tournament before leaving for Manchester next week where she has been invited to join the GB Academy full time.

Georgia and her gold medal with GB Development coach Gareth Brown in Portugal

September 8th, 2013: British National Championships

Day 1 (advanced categories) of the National Championships in Manchester yielded 4 gold medals for BTS.  Archie Waldock, Mollie Schofield, Jenny Marjason and Jeamy Navarro-Schrank are the new National Champions in their respective divisions.  A few very close calls could easily have strengthened this tally with Max losing on golden point and both Hannah and Will losing out on referee decision.

Day 1 Team with 2012 Olympic bronze medallist Lutalo Muhammad, GB Team member Andrew Deer and GB development coach Gareth Brown at the Manchester velodrome:

Day 2 (novice categories) was a little quieter but no less exciting for BTS who only had a team of 4.  Ryan Simpson put in a convincing performance to take gold.  Marianna Jabbar in her first ever outing for the club and Kara Jonsson fighting well out of her weight had to settle for bronze.

Day 2 team was well supported with 1 coach per athlete:

Over the 2 days the team returned 5 gold, 3 silver and 5 bronze medals.

August 18th, 2013: First BTS inter-club technical championships

Natasha Earwood is crowned overall champion

July 4th, 2013: 2 BTS players selected for the Academy

Georgia Barnes and Ben Haines have been selected to train full time at the GB Academy in Manchester.  Part of a new intake in preparation for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, they will now train alongside the very best including Olympic medallists Jade Jones and Lutalo Muhammad.  A testament to the quality of the BTS club, this is the first time 2 athletes from the same club have been selected to join the Academy in the same year.  Only 4 athletes have been selected from WTF clubs and half of them come from BTS!  Georgia and Ben's dedication has paid off and we wish them all the luck and success they deserve.  We would also like to thank them both for the huge contribution they have made to the club over the last few years.  Make the most of the opportunity!

June 30th, 2013: Test Match day

Once again, clubs from across the South came together with the common aim of providing development opportunities for their players.  Gurumu (London), Southams (Plymouth), Dorset tkd and New Milton taekwondo clubs all joined BTS in Southampton for an intense training day: 2 hours of training in the morning and 3 hours of test matches in the afternoon using the Daedo electronic scoring system.  Thank you to all coaches for attending and contributing to this day.  The cooperation between the clubs is vital for the development of all players.  Let's keep it going!  If any other clubs would like to attend future events please email Yan (This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.).

Southern clubs set the standard: 8 of the 47 players who attended the test match day will feature later this year at the cadet and junior European Championships.  Those players train with BTS, Gurumu and Southams.

June 13th, 2013: GB selection

3 BTS players have been selected to represent Team GB at the upcoming Cadet European Championships in Romania this August and Junior European Championships in Portugal this September.

Georgia Barnes has been called up again in juniors -49kgs after her great performance and bronze medal at the under 21 championships earlier this year.  Georgia was also part of the team for the junior european championships 2 years ago in Cyprus.

It is however a first call for Jeamy Navarro-Schrank (cadets -41kgs) and Mollie Schofield (cadets +59kgs).

Congratulations and good luck to all three!

June 2nd, 2013: Breakthrough for Hannah

The Austria Open in Innsbruck will be one to remember for Hannah Physick who had to go through 5 fights to get her silver medal and her best international result so far.  She had to beat fighters from the Czech Republic, Holland and Germany twice before losing out to a very experienced fighter from Croatia.

This last tournament of the season also saw Archie Waldock take silver.

May 25th, 2013: International Youth Cup

Jeamy wins gold at the International Youth Cup in Dormagen (Germany)

May 13th, 2013: Additional funding from Exxon Mobil

The Team Fund was given a boost today with a £1,000 grant from Exxon Mobil's volunteer involvement programme.  This will allow the club to purchase a set of size 2 Daedo electronic chest pads with transmitters and a receiver to complement the sizes 1 and 3  we already have.  Training on the now widely used electronic scoring system is essential for tournament preparation and Exxon Mobil's support over the last few years has greatly contributed to the very impressive results the club is achieving both at national and international levels.

May 12th, 2013: Capital Cup

16 players, 8 gold, 4 silver and 3 bronze medals.  Fantastic results and performances for the club this weekend with 3players competing for the very first time (Billy Pragnell, Owen Sanders, Karlos Gregory) and 1 player competing in WTF taekwondo for the first time (Catherine Pearson).

May 5th, 2013: Archie wins gold at the Spanish Open

Archie Waldock was on form today at the Spanish Open beating a very competitive field to the gold medal.  Congratulations!

May 3rd, 2013: Gareth announced as high performance coach for GB Taekwondo

After many years coaching the BTS Team to successes around the world, Gareth has now been announced as high performance coach for GB Taekwondo.  He will be responsible for the development of the Junior and Cadet Teams, working within the Talent development programme funded by Sport England.  Gareth has been working with the GB development squads for 2 years but he will now be based full time at the Academy in Manchester.

BTS would like to thank Gareth for his devotion to the club and wish him all the success he deserves in this new challenge.

Steve Johnson will now take over Gareth's position at BTS as full time coach.

April 21st, 2013: Under-21 European Championships

A huge well done to Georgia Barnes for winning a bronze medal on the last day of the under-21 European Championships in Moldova.  Georgia is the only GB player returning with a medal.  BTS was well represented within the squad with 2 players.  Ben Haines unfortunately exited the tournament in the preliminary rounds after being very narrowly beaten by Germany 16-17.  Congratulations to Georgia and Ben for representing the club so well at this major championship.

April 13th-14th, 2013: Dan grading

It was 100% pass rate for BTS students at the Dan grading this weekend in Mansfield with the club now having 3 more black belts as a result.  Max Cater, Owen Sanders and Will Martin  passed their first Dan on Saturday while Jeamy Navarro-Schrank passed her 2nd Dan on Sunday.  Congratulations!

April 7th, 2013: Belgian Open

Mollie Schofield wins the cadets +59 division at the Belgian Open and takes home a well deserved gold medal after a very mature performance.

This was also Steve Johnson's first outing as the BTS team coach and judging by the team performance it won't take him long to settle in the role.  Each of the 5 BTS players won matches and only some very close referee decisions denied the team a bigger medal haul.  The team is now preparing for the Spanish Open in Alicante early next month.

March 31st, 2013

Gareth Brown announces that he is no longer coaching the BTS Team.  The club structure between traditional taekwondo and sports taekwondo will remain the same with new club coach, Steven Johnson, taking over the full time role with support from other BTS coaches Craig Roppolo, Marcin Swedrzynski and Kate Swedrzynska.  The squad will continue to train as regularly as they currently do, with individual development PT sessions run by Steven Johnson.

Gareth would like to thank all the athletes involved at the club for giving him some very enjoyable and memorable moments in coaching.  He would also like to thank the other staff at the club for their support, and of course the parents for the challenges they provided him with!

Good luck to the new coaching team at the club, and continued good luck and hard work to ALL athletes! Something like this needs to go on!

March 25th, 2013: Under 21 European Championships selection

GB taekwondo have announced today the team for the Under 21 European Championships which will be run from April 18-21 in Moldova.  The team includes 2 BTS players: Ben Haines has been selected in the -80 kgs category and Georgia Barnes will fight the -49 kgs group.

February 24th, 2013

Today caps one of the busiest half term week the team has ever had. Although the whole team was at squad training on Saturday morning as usual, the schedule was anything but routine after that with cadet and junior national training camps in Manchester, US Open in Las Vegas and Luxembourg Open in... Luxembourg!

BTS had a record 6 juniors training in Manchester with the national squad after Sean and Georgia moved up from the cadet squad.

Ben made his coaching debut in Las Vegas steering Jeamy to a strong performance with 2 wins before narrowly missing out in the quarter final.

It was Steve's turn to make his coaching debut in Luxembourg where BTS sent 6 players for development.  The Team came back with 2 bronze medals for Georgia Appleby after moving up 2 weight groups to get some fights and Kyla Cacacho on her first international tournament.

February 11th, 2013: Trelleborg Open

Ben Haines had to go through 5 fights to win silver at the Trelleborg Open in Sweden beating Serbia, Holland, Kuwait and Israel in the process.  He also picked up the runner up trophy at the Portsmouth News Young Sports Personality Award ceremony tonight.

Georgia Barnes also turned heads this weekend picking up a bronze medal in Sweden in the senior division at the age of 16.

January 3rd, 2013: London 2012 legacy equipment competition

Back in November a number of BTS players entered the Olympic legacy equipment competition organised by British Taekwondo.  Jeamy Navarro-Schrank won one of the categories with her essay about how watching the olympic games inspired her.  As a result the club was given some equipment including 2 "London 2012" headguards signed by Sarah Stevenson, Jade Jones, Lutalo Muhammad and Martin Stamper.  Jeamy and Joe went to pick up the equipment this morning from British Taekwondo Chairman, Adrian Tranter.

November 21st, 2012: OCS Young Sports Person Awards

BTS player Jeamy Navarro-Schrank scooped the "Rising Star" award at this year's star studded ceremony held at BAFTA in Picadilly.  Amongst others Beth Tweddle (London 2012 bronze), Sam Oldham (London 2012 bronze), Katherine Grainger (London 2012 gold), Tim Baillie (London 2012 gold), Rory Underwood MBE, Mark Foster, Ade Adepitan and host Gaby Logan (BBC) were all in attendance.

November 11th, 2012: Croatia Open

Archie Waldock takes silver at the Croatia Open in Zagreb after 5 fights and only just losing in the final on golden point.  Fantastic work Archie!

November 10th, 2012: Black belt grading

It's a 100% pass rate for BTS students at this weekend's black belt grading in Mansfield which is a credit to Joe and Gareth's teaching standards and diligence when preparing their students.  Congratulations to Josh, Kyla, Joseph, Hannah and Sean who are now all black belts and a big thank you to Siva (Gurumu Team) for his support on the day.  Congratulations also to Jason (not on picture) who passed his second Dan.  Sol (not pictured) from the Portsmouth club also passed his first Dan

October 21st, 2012: Gold in Serbia for BTS

Georgia Barnes won 4 fights to take gold at the Serbian Open (A Class) in Belgrade this weekend.  Great performance, congratulations!

Sept 27th, 2012: Only 24 spaces left for self defence seminar

There are only 24 spaces left for the self defence seminar on October 14th so make sure you book your space asap to avoid disappointment. The seminar will be held at the All Saints Church Hall between 1pm-4pm and is open to everybody, not just BTS members.  The seminar is also ideal preparation for all senior gradings.  See events/gradings section for more details.

Sept 12th, 2012: BTS Head Coach gets married!

On behalf of the whole club, heartfelt congratulations and best wishes for the future to Gareth and Sarah who got married today in Mauritius.  Thankfully BTS sent its very own paparazzi to the island and he came up trumps as we received this picture.

Sept 9th, 2012: British National Championships - Manchester

After some debate the club decided to send a team to the Nationals despite both Gareth, our head team coach and Joe, our chief instructor being away in Mauritius for Gareth's wedding.  The decision paid off and BTS came back with a haul of medals and an unexpected 2nd place team trophy on day 1 (Advanced).  They were some outstanding performances throughout the team including Jenny doing the double (gold in both juniors and seniors), Georgia (gold in juniors and bronze in seniors), Archie (Silver in Juniors), Georgia A (gold for her first tournament with BTS), Kara (Bronze in her first ever tournament)... Please see the results section for a full list.

These performances and results would not have been possible without the very generous help of a few key people.  On behalf of the whole BTS club a massive thank you to:

  • Craig Roppolo: Craig was in Southampton on Friday night to cover Joe's class, drove up to Manchester very early Saturday morning and coached an insane number of fights on the first day to steer the team to 2nd place (advanced categories).
  • Marcin Swedrzynski: Marcin backed Craig up and even interrupted his own warm up to coach.

British Taekwondo President Adrian Tranter presented Joe Brown with a special Gold Award in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the development of WTF taekwondo in the UK.  Joe started taekwondo in 1973 while serving with British ground forces in Hong Kong and has been training ever since.   Joe took part in many tournaments representing London Taekwondo Division, Chung Do Kwan and on 28/11/1981 was awarded the best senior fighter trophy and his last national championships was in Aylesbury in 1983 (29 yrs old) where he fought lightweight.  He was the only fighter from the Southampton area.

Joe Brown was at the inaugural meeting of the British Taekwondo Control Board on April 24th, 1982 at the Birmingham Centre Hotel and was invited by the then President of the BTCB, Mr Oscar State, OBE, and the then General Secretary, Mr John Ingram.  This was initiated by the BOA (1-2 John Prince's St, London) on March 22nd, 1982.  Joe's club was then registered with the BTCB as club No 000036 and was acknowledged by R W Palmer who was then the BOA's General Secretary.

July 15th, 2012: British International Open - Crawley

BTS had a fantastic day at the British International Open in Crawley this weekend bringing home 7 golds, 4 silvers, 2 bronzes and 3rd place Team Trophy!  There were many really good performances on the day but special mentions go to Anne and Erika who worked their way to gold by showing huge improvements and great composure.  The credit for these improvements all round also has to go to Gareth and his outstanding professional skills.

This is how Gareth summed the day up: "It was really pleasing to see 11 players in the finals but even more pleasing to see that all players applied the key areas that have been worked on in training over the past few weeks".

A big thank you also to Jan Annis for representing BTS amongst the referees at this event.

May 16th, 2012: 16-21 European Championships

BTS player Ben Haines has been selected to represent Team GB at the 16-21 European Championships in Athens this June.  Ben has however declined the invitation as the tournament clashes with the Junior training camp in Korea.  It was a difficult choice but he has decided to focus on long term development and the camp in Korea will be more beneficial. Ben will still be young enough to be eligible for the same tournament in 2014.
